This week’s photo prompt is provided by Yinglan Z. Thank you Yinglan.
Mae cracked three eggs, beating them well before adding them to the cake batter. Her nephew Kevin was coming today, bringing with him six year old Jenny. Or maybe seven? She would have to get that right for the candles.
While the cake cooled, she made pink frosting and thought back to the day when her nephew left town, taking his one year old daughter with him,, leaving the neighbors with many unanswered questions. Mae asked herself the same questions and was unable to come up with any answers.
A bad egg, the townsfolk said. But not all bad. Mae had always tried to see the good in her brother’s son. Remembered his kindness to his old aunt. There had been many years with no contact from Henry until his letter arrived saying that they would come on Tuesday and by the way it was Jenny’s birthday and would she make the coconut cake he remembered from childhood?
May finished adding a layer of coconut just as she heard the sound of the car. Wiping her hands on her apron, she opened the door as an SUV stopped in the driveway. The attached trailer gave hope that this would turn into something more than just a visit.
